Air Canada ground staff serve strike notice

Air Canada announced, Tuesday, it had received strike notice from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

More than 8,000 baggage handlers, mechanics and cargo agents could go on strike as early as 12:01 Monday morning, undoubtedly causing anxiety for passengers making March Break travel plans.

“We recognize that the IAMAW’s notice of strike action in the midst of the peak March Break travel period will cause uncertainty for thousands of our customers,” said Duncan Dee, Air Canada’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

“The lines of communication remain open and we are hopeful that there remains sufficient time to avoid a work disruption.”

“We are the largest unionized workforce at Air Canada,” the union wrote in a statement posted on its website.

“Without us, it’s all grounded.”

The last time a strike was threatened at the airline, the federal government intervened in the dispute to prevent a work stoppage.
