Alberta’s two major airports – Calgary International and Edmonton International – were the top-ranked Canadian facilities in their categories in on-time performance in 2019, according to a new study released Friday by OAG, an aviation data firm.

Calgary ranked 17th among all airports in the world serving between 10 and 20 million departing seats last year, with an on-time performance of 80.7%. The average on-time performance for all airports in the category was 82.9%.

OAG defines on-time performance as a departure or arrival within 15 minutes of the scheduled time.

Edmonton ranked 20th out of the world’s airports serving between five and 10 million seats, with a 79.9% OTP. The average in the category was 82.5%. No other Canadian airport ranked among the top-20 worldwide.

Among Canada’s scheduled airlines, Westjet posted the best on-time performance with 79% of flights arriving within 15 minutes of the scheduled time. That placed the airline at 15th among the world’s low-cost carriers, though the airline is transitioning to a full-service model, and sixth among North American airlines.

There is a strong correlation between OTP results at Westjet and Calgary International, with the city serving as the airline’s primary hub.

Air Canada posted a 66% on-time performance last year, good enough for 20th spot among the world’s so-called mega airlines, the world’s largest carriers. LATAM posted the top OTP in the category, with 86% of flights arriving on time.

Smaller carriers, such as Flair and Harbour Air, were excluded from the survey, as were charter airlines, such as Transat and Sunwing.

Canada did not fare well in the survey, which was dominated by Asia-Pacific airlines. Among all airlines, Garuda posted the best performance in the world in 2019, with more than 95% of its flights departing or arriving on time.
