It has yet to fly to a single destination, but the pieces have started to fall into place for Canada Jetlines, which hopes to launch service as an ultra low-cost carrier this year.

Jetlines announced Tuesday a deal with three Mexican destinations popular with Canadian sun-worshippers, Puerto Vaillarta, Los Cabos and Cancun.

Canadians made almost two million trips to Mexico every year, and that figure is growing.

“We are thrilled to announce future service to these airports,” said Jetlines CEO Javier Suarez in a statement. “I have worked in this market extensively and have a deep understanding of how to operate successful routes in and out of Mexico. We look forward to providing Canadians with ultra-low fares for their vacation plans.

“Our low fares will also encourage Mexicans to visit beautiful Canada.”

Jetlines will likely serve the destinations from its planned hub in Hamilton, Ontario with Airbus A320 aircraft. Competition to Mexico will be fierce, with Westjet-owned Swoop airlines launching service from Hamilton to Cancun and Puerto Vaillarta in the past few weeks.

Jetlines has spent months building its cash reserves, including a partnership with European aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance provider SmartLynx, who will provide leased A320s for the next eight winter flying seasons.

Jetlines needs its operating license and regulatory approvals to operate flights to Mexico. It hopes to launch operations in 2019.
