Edmonton sets new record for U.S.-bound passengers

More passengers flew to and from the United States from Edmonton in February than at any point in the airport’s history.

The airport posted its preliminary passenger figures on Tuesday.

108,062 passengers either left to, or returned from, destinations in the United States in February, 12 per cent more than in 2011, although 2012 has one additional day because of leap year.

Horizon Airlines, Delta, United Airlines, USAir and Westjet all serve the United States from Edmonton.

Domestic and international passenger numbers also saw a marked increase: 371,142 (a 9.6 per cent increase over 2011) flew to destinations in Canada, and 49,637 (also a 9.6 per cent increase) flew to destinations in Mexico and overseas.

Overall, more than one million people have flown through the airport in the first two months of the year, 9.4 per cent ahead of last year.

The growth is being attributed in part to a boom in Alberta’s oil patch, which has boosted business, and has new residents flocking to the city.
