Edmonton waits for flight growth

As reported earlier, growth has resumed at Edmonton International Airport, with passenger numbers hitting their highest level since 2008, and second highest number ever.

The airport has opened a massive expansion of its US departures holdroom, and is in the construction phase of new gates connecting the disparate sections of the terminal.

But whereas back in 2008 airlines seemed to be struggling to keep up with demand, adding new flights and destinations, the summer of 2012 appears to see the major carriers holding pat.

Aside from a second daily flight to Houston aboard a United/Continental 737, there have been few flight announcements for the coming summer, and the two major airlines serving Edmonton – Air Canada and Westjet – are in a holding pattern.

Here is a sampling for flights for the two Canadian airlines for a random day this summer, June 21, the longest day of the year. They are remarkably similar to what you would have seen on the same day in 2011, even 2010, although Air Canada few non-stop to Halifax two summers ago.
