Officials are trying to figure out how a FedEx Boeing 767 veered off a straight section of taxiway and onto the grass at Vancouver International Airport Thursday morning.

FedEx flight 142 had just landed from Memphis. It had left the runway and was rolling on taxiway L to the FedEx terminal, normally a low-risk procedure, when the incident happened.

“FedEx Express Flight 142 from Memphis to Vancouver, British Columbia, experienced an event while taxiing to the gate,” a FedEx spokesperson said in an email. “The aircraft was towed and maintenance is evaluating. There were no reported injuries.”

Cargo has been one of the few bright spots in aviation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve seen 30% year over year increase in cargo in March and April,” said Robyn McVicker, Vancouver International’s Vice-President of Operations at a news conference Thursday.

Crews from the airport authority and Air Canada responded. The plane was towed back onto the taxiway about an hour later.

A spokesperson for Vancouver International said there was no impact on operations.
