“Sales between Edmonton and Oakland did not demonstrate the demand we were expecting and as such, the decision was made to pull back on launching this route,” said spokesperson Karen McIsaac in an e-mail.
Oakland was one of a handful of new destinations and routes announced in Swoop’s summer schedule. The list also includes London, Ontario, which gains dozens of new flights each week. All of Swoop’s other summer plans remain on track, said McIsaac.
Swoop’s flight was to have been the first service to Oakland from anywhere in Canada. It is the second airport in the San Francisco bay area, serving mainly leisure travellers. Southwest airlines is its largest carrier.
The route would have offered direct competition with Air Canada’s daily service from Edmonton to San Francisco.
