After cancelling daily service earlier this year, Aeromexico is once again trying its hand at flights to Calgary, Alberta.
Aeromexico will operate four flights a week between Calgary and Mexico City, from May 31 to September 2.
Aeromexico last flew the route for almost a year, offering daily flights before they were cancelled in April, 2018. Aeromexico is seizing an opportunity after code-share partner Westjet cut service between the two cities in a bid to cut costs and restore profitability.
“We are pleased that AeroMexico is reestablishing a link between Calgary and Mexico City this summer,” said Royce Chwin, CEO of Travel Alberta in a statement. “This flight will allow us to welcome more Mexican travellers to Alberta and further develop lasting economic ties between our two countries.”
The Calgary Airport Authority estimates the new flight will create the equivalent of 70 jobs, and add $10 million to Alberta’s economy.
“The connection allows Albertans direct access to Mexico City,” said Bob Sartor, President and CEO, The Calgary Airport Authority. “Albertans will also be able to access Aeromexico’s extensive network that connects to major markets in the Caribbean, Central and South America.”
The flight will operate on Monday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, arriving in the evening in Calgary, and departing for a red-eye flight back to the mexican capital.
A one-way flight from Calgary to Mexico City on the first day of service is selling for less than $500.
