Halifax Stanfield International Airport is welcoming back American Airlines, connecting the Atlantic Canadian hub with Philadelphia and New York City this summer.

Philadelphia sees the biggest boost in service. Flights will operate daily on 76-seat Embraer 175 aircraft, connecting to American’s extensive network from their hub. American has offered the route in the past, but abandoned service in January 2017. Flights to New York will operate only on Saturdays.

“We’re delighted to welcome American Airlines back to our community,” said Jo-Anne McLean, Halifax’s Director of Air Service and Terminal Business Development in a statement. “These routes will provide business and leisure travellers with more options and more choice, and boost inbound tourism to our region.”

American is targetting the Saturday flight from New York squarely at tourists. It’s part of a strategy appealing to people who fly on business Monday to Friday, but want to fly for leisure on the weekend.

“The reality is business customer travels a lot during the week,” said Vasu Raja, Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning at American. “Increasingly on the weekend we are doing things more of where we fly more of these leisure markets,”

Flights between Halifax and the US cities will operate between mid-June and late September or early October.
