The Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation says it will create about 100 jobs this year in the Montreal area as it prepares for certification and entry into service of its SpaceJet regional jet.

Mitsubishi has already established a U.S. headquarters for the SpaceJet in Renton, Washington to go with its head office in Nagoya, Japan. In June, the company bought the remnants of the Canadair Regional passenger Jet from Bombardier, whose main manufacturing is done in and around Montreal. Some of Mitsubishi’s existing partners are already established in the area.

“As a Japanese company with a global market, we are building a strong global presence in order to position the Mitsubishi SpaceJet family for success,” said Hisakazu Mizutani, President, Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation in a statement. “We have great respect for the achievements and capabilities in Quebec and are excited to be here.”

“Our Montreal presence adds to our footprint in major global aerospace hubs, including Nagoya and Washington State,” said Alex Bellamy, Chief Development Officer.

“Since introducing our product family in June, we have had an overwhelmingly positive response, and we are intent on building the team that allows us to fully support our airline partners and customers. Quebec is an obvious choice for us.”

The company will set up shop in Boisbriand north of the city and a few minutes from Mirabel Airport. Earlier this month, the federal government announced $50 million to enhance the airport’s cargo and logistics operations including a renewed apron, roadworks, and new warehouse space.

The SpaceJet is designed to compete in the regional jet market with up to 88 seats in a single-class configuration.

The company is doing certification test flights in Washington State and hopes to receive certification in time to deliver its first aircraft in 2020. It has already received orders for more than 100 planes.

Mitsubishi will hold a job fair in Montreal September 21 with an eye on future growth beyond its initial investment.
