Westjet discount brand Swoop plans three new destinations and nine new routes in 2020 summer schedule announced Friday.

Two cities in British Columbia, Victoria and Kamloops, are the only Canadian additions, while Swoop will once again try to launch service to San Diego, California. Plans to launch a route from Edmonton to San Diego were scrapped earlier this year when the Boeing 737 Max crisis led to a shortage of second-hand Boeing 737-800NG aircraft – the type Swoop flies – on the market.

“In only 18 months, Swoop has experienced significant growth, and we are excited to continue this momentum with the release of our 2020 summer schedule,” said Steven Greenway, President, Swoop. The airline plans almost 300 weekly departures to 16 destinations between May and October.

Edmonton is the big winner in this summer’s schedule, with new routes to Kamloops and San Diego. Swoop’s largest base will grow from 51 weekly flights over the winter to 67 next summer, including a number of formerly seasonal routes to Mexico and the Southern United States that will now be year-round.

Swoop has been growing in the Alberta capital, while parent company Westjet has scaled back operations in the city, concentrating instead on its hub in Calgary, 300 km to the south. Edmonton has seen passenger numbers fall almost five per cent over the summer from record highs in 2018.

Hamilton will see 57 weekly flights this summer and Abbotsford 54, including 24 weekly flights to Edmonton.

Proportionally, Winnipeg sees the biggest Swoop increase, from 23 weekly flights last summer to 38 in 2020, with the addition of new routes to Victoria and London, Ontario as well as flights to Las Vegas and Orlando, Florida going year-round.

In all, the Swoop summer schedule features 290 weekly departures to 16 destinations in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The only route not returning from sumer 2019 is between Kelowna and Las Vegas, a route that was added when San Diego fell through.

Swoop is part of the sale of Westjet to Onex Corporation in a $5 billion transaction. The company announced the completion of the sale this week with shares being delisted from the Toronto Stock Exchange.
