Swoop Airlines became the first Canadian ultra low-cost carrier to serve Mexico Tuesday, as it launched service from its hub in Hamilton, Ontario to Puerto Vallarta.

It’s the first of four routes the airline will fly from Canada to Mexico. Swoop will also launch service to Cancun and from Abbotsford, British Columbia to Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan later this month.

“Not only are we celebrating Swoop’s entry into its fourth country in under six months of operation, but also a brand-new route for the Hamilton airport”, said Karen McIsaac, Senior Advisor of Communications at Swoop in a statement. “Swoop continues to write a progressive narrative in the history of Canadian air travel, benefiting the thousands of Canadians that choose to fly with us every day and influencing growth in the tourism industry.”

“Puerto Vallarta is a brand-new destination offered for the first time from Hamilton and is a popular destination for Canadian and U.S. customers heading south to escape the cold winter weather,” said Cathie Puckering, President & CEO of Hamilton International Airport. “Hamilton is proud to fulfil this demand and see its list of sun destinations continue to grow in 2019.”

Swoop parent airline Westjet also offers service to Mexico from Canada, though not from Hamilton or Abbotsford.

Fares to Mexico start at $99. Swoop offers a service where it charges for the seat, and additional fees for everything else, right down to a printing a paper ticket.

Calgary-based Swoop now offers service to 14 destinations in Canada, the United States, Mexico and Montego Bay Jamaica.
