Vancouver International Airport has been awarded the title of best airport in North America at the annual Skytrax awards for a record 10th straight year.

The awards are regarded as a quality benchmark for the world airport industry, assessing customer service and facilities across over 550 airports worldwide.

Airport chief executive Craig Richmond received the award at a ceremony Wednesday in London.

Vancouver beat out Denver International and Atlanta to take the prestigious award in North America.

Toronto’s Pearson International ranked 7th on the continent, while Montreal’s Trudeau airport was 10th.

All three airports set passenger records in 2018, which is significant as they all serve as hubs for Air Canada. Rival Westjet, meanwhile, maintains significant hubs of its own in Toronto and Vancouver.

The world’s top airport, according to Sktrax was Singapore-Changi for the seventh consecutive year. It was followed by Tokyo-Haneda and Seoul-Incheon. No North American airport made the list of the top 10 facilities in the world in 2019; Vancouver was 17th, Toronto 50th, and Montreal 62nd. Halifax was the only other airport to make the top-100 in the world, coming in at 90th position.

The top airport hotel in North America went to the Fairmont Vancouver Airport, which is integrated into the terminal, above YVR’s U.S. departures area.

Skytrax has been conducting the awards since 1999, taking surveys of passengers “to deliver a customer survey and airport awards process that is independent, impartial and global, and this ethos remains essential to all aspects in the present day,” according to Skytrax.

Seattle took home the award for best airport staff in North America, in 2019, while Denver won for best regional airport in North America.

Vancouver has scheduled a celebration with passengers, employees and partners for Monday April 1.
